Extracts from the will of Andrew Sproule, of Annotto Bay, Jamaica, dated 3rd August 1801
“I, Andrew Sproule, of Annotto Bay, in the Parish of St. George, and Island of Jamaica, being in perfect health and sound understanding, do make this my last will and testament in manner and form following, viz: - I desire that all my debts should be immediately paid. I desire that my executors after paying my funeral expenses, will sell all my effects, real and personal, by public sale.
“I give to the following people the following sums: -
“To the widow of my late uncle, Andrew Sproule, of Tullymoon, in the Parish of Urney, in the County of Tyrone, in Ireland, and to his children lawfully begotten, £500 sterling, to be divided between the widow and the children, share and share alike, for their proper use and behoof.
“To my uncle, Samuel Boyd, of Legnathraw, St. Johnston, in the Parish of Taughboyne, in Ireland, £200 sterling to be divided share and share alike between him and his wife Nellie Boyd, my aunt and their children, now in Ireland, for their proper use and behoof.
“To Nancy Calhound, wife of the late William Calhound and daughter of my late uncle, Alexander McCausland, of Tullyrap, near Raphoe, £100 sterling for her proper use.
“To my aunt, Jane Hudson, wife of Walter Hudson, of Enniskillen in Ireland, Ireland, £100 for her proper use.
“Should James Sproule, son of my late uncle, Andrew Sproule, of Tullymoon, in the County of Tyrone, in Ireland, settle in this island, I desire my executors will pay £50 for 4 years from the day of his arrival, paying him his first £50 ten days after he arrives, and the payment in every twelve months afterwards.
To Jane Crawford, of Thrushbank, Donegal, in County Donegal, in Ireland, £100 sterling.
“I give £1,000 British to be lent and the interest distributed yearly to the poor of the Parish of Urney. This is given by the testator as a small token of gratitude to the poor in the Parish in which he drew his first breath and in which he spent many happy days.
“I give to my uncle, Hugh Stevenson, of Legnathraw, in the Parish of Taughboyne, in Ireland, and to my Aunt Betty, his wife, and their children £200 sterling, to be divided amongst them, share and share alike.
“I desire that my executors will immediately after my death make my favourite little slave, Nancy, daughter of my slave, Patience, free, and that she be put under the care of some discreet woman to learn to sew, and that my executors will pay her £20 per annum for five years for clothing for her.
“I will and declare the remainder of my property, real and personal, to my dear mother, Margaret Perry, now wife of John Perry, of Strabane, in the County of Tyrone, in Ireland, and formerly Margaret Sproule, in said county, my late father, and to my dearly-beloved Margaret Crawford, of Thrushbank, in the County of Donegal, share and share alike, for their proper use and benefit, and benefit, and to be disposed of when divided, by my executors as they think proper.
“Should any of the above legatees be dead before the will is put in execution, I desire that the several sums left to them shall go to their lawful heirs.
