CHURCHILL is a small post town in the county of Fermanagh, eighty-four miles north-west of Dublin, nine north-west of Enniskillen, nine east-by-south of Belleek, and thirteen east-by-south of Ballyshannon. It stands in a very commanding situation, and is the property of the Marquis of Ely, who is building a handsome residence on an island in Lough Erne, to which the town is contiguous. Here is a plain comfortable church adorned with a square steeple; a mile north-east of the town stand the ruins of the castle of Tully, and at Derryconnelly, two miles distant, are the remains of an ancient church. A considerable butter market is held here, which begins on the first Wednesday of July and continues until Christmas; the principal buyers are from Newry. The market day is Wednesday, and fairs are held on the 14th of May and the last day in November. The population is about 150.
