  BIOGRAPHY: The Grand Butleer of France was one of the great offices of state in France, existing between the Middle Ages and the Revolution of 1789. Originally responsible for the maintenance of the Royal vineyards, and provisioning the court with wine, the role of Butler became less and less impportant and more ceremonial over time.
