Notes |
- DEATH: Reportedly died suddenly of a heart attack, when collecting a large log for the Xmas fire.
BIRTH: Keston, Kent. [Lauran Birch, 2007]
BIOGRAPHY: Very little is known of Richard prior to his marriage to Elizabeth Purcell on 14 January 1833 at Walworth, Surrey. They had 4 children. On the 6th June 1841 census the family appears at Westerham Road in Keston Kent. Richard's occupation is shown as gardener, his age as 30 and his county of birth as Kent.
Richard died in December 1841 and was buried at Farnborough, a neighbouring parish. Parish records show other Winchesters also buried at Farnboroug: Mary in 1828 age 22, William in 1838 aged 63 and Sarah in 1846 age 74.
The parish register showing the baptism entry for a Richard Winchester born 5 August 1810 and baptized 8 August 1810 is severely fire damaged.
Elizabeth Purcell was the daughter of James Purcell and Mary Clemson who were married in 1790. Family oral history states that James Purcell was the son of a Lady Jane Purcell but to date no evidence has been found to that effect.
BIOGRAPHY:(LDS Film 306875-1841 Census of Keston Kent)
Richard Winchester- age 30- Gardener- Born in county
Elizabeth - age 30- not born in county
Philip - age 8- Born in county
Eliza -age 5 - Born in county
Herbert- age 3- Born in county
Jane - age 1- Born in county
James -age4- not born in county
It is possible that James was a nephew. The 1841 census is not as informative as the later years and does not show relationships to heads of household and did not give the actual place of birth. This is the only Winchester family recorded as living in Keston in the census and no other Winchester families were recorded in the parish registers (1540-1876) since 1585, where the baptism of only one other Winchester was recorded.
Another interesting find on this film was the next entry after Richard's. This showed Holwood House, a very substantial property consisting of a mansion and three farms which border the parish of Keston and Farnborough. The head of the household was a James Ward Esq. and his wife Jane. Descendants of Herbert Winchester in Australia have been told that they are descendants of a Lady Jane Purcell who lived at Holwood House, and Herbert had named his house in Wood Street, Hamilton NSW, Holwood Lodge. Holwood House originally belonged to William Pitt a former Prime Minister of England at which stage it was named Pitt House.
After Richard's death in 1841 Elizabeth remained a widow for 13 years. On 12 December 1854 she married her lodger, Phillip Wood at St. Mary's, Newington, Surrey. Elizabeth and Phillip had no children. Philip, Elizabeth and her children Eliza, Jane and Herbert emigrated to Australia and arrived on 25 May, 1855 aboard "The Punjab" into Adelaide. Her son Phillip and his wife had already emigrated aboard "The Blackfriars" into Newcastle, NSW as an assisted immigrant. Elizabeth died on 27 June 1898 in Hamilton, NSW aged 88 and was buried at Sandgate Cemetery.
