- Thomas Connaughton from Jack & Donna Huldie
Sent : Tuesday, December 27, 2005
from Pension Records of benefits to Margaret Connaughton:
Thomas was 23 years old in 1862. He enlisted in Company E, Captain Ta
ywell?s 55 Regiment of Illinois Volunteers on August 4, 1861, at DeKalb, Illinois. He was discharged on August 14, 1862, at Memphis, Tennessee. In December of 1861, he was in Camp Douglas, where he contracted inflamation of the eyes. For the last five years of his life he was a patient of Doctor Thomas Fitch, who found it necessary to amputate Thomas?s arm a few months before his death on September 8, 1876. Thomas was 5?8? tall, with a light complexion, blue eyes, and light hair.
Thomas was possibly born in Sligo, Ireland, in 1836.
He had two half-brothers, Rodger and Martin Harrison (or Connaughton). His mother was married twice.
Thomas was married to Margaret Carroll on February 19, 1865 (could beFebruary 16,1863) in St. Mary?s Church, Cooperstown. The ceremony was performed by Reverend Clark, and the witnesses were William Mulaly and Ann Bigley. Thomas and Margaret had met in the United States.
Thomas was for a while employed as a teacher in Rochester, New York. He also did clerical work for the town of Cherry Valley. At the time of his enlistment, he listed his occupation as farmer. For the last years of his life, it was Doctor Fitch?s opinion that Thomas was unable to do two months? work in a year.
He wrote letters to Ireland for immigrants who could not write.
from 1860 Federal Census:
A Thomas Connington was living with Edward Phelon and his wife and three children in Cherry Valley, New York. Thomas was 22 years old and had been born in Ireland. No occupation is listed for Thomas, but Phelon was a farmer. This would fit in with Thomas?s saying he was a farmer at the time
of his enlistment the following year.
from 1865 State Census:
Thomas (31) and Margaret (26) were married and living in Springfield with John Carroll. Thomas was from Ireland. He was a farmer. Thomas had been naturalized, and had been in the army.
form 1870 Federal Census:
Thomas Conerton was living in East Springfield with his wife and three children. There may have been a fourth child, Bridgit (T)uffy (perhaps the daughter of Margaret?s sister,Catherine Duffy, whose husband was lost at sea), who had been born in Ireland, living with them. Thomas was 34 years
old and a farmer. He owned land valued at 750 dollars. His personal estate was worth another 250 dollars. He had been born in Ireland, and both his parents were of foreign birth.
Thomas is buried in Cooperstown.
