- I have the original land grant signed by President Buchanan for our farm on Boma Ridge. The Land Grant was dated June 1, 1858 and was given to Myron W. Wood of Grant County Wisconsin. It was for "the West half of the North-West quarter, and the North-East quarter of the South-West quarter of Section Eight, in Township Ten North, of Range Five West, in the district of Lands subject to sale at Mineral Point Wisconsin, containing one hundred and twenty acres."
I don't know if we sold land to the Conleys. I do know that they had a farm across the road from us when I was very young - both farms are now owned by the Ellefsons. Jim Conley also had a cheese factory across the road that was later bought by the Laufenbergs and then the Heiars and is now non-existant. Other neighbors were the Moldrems, the Dagnons, and the Kvignes. We were the last Finleys on the ridge. I think the Luceys are the only Irish in that area now - actually they're Finleys too since the mother of the family was Irene Finley, daughter of James Finley & Hannah Lynch and grand daughter of Curly Jack and Maria Denning. Nancy
Hi Nancy. It sure brings back memories, like spending hot summers and hating it going to Catechism classes in the basement of St. James Church, or eating warm fresh cheese curds at the cheese factory. Jeanne Finley (Schick) was my run-away buddy when we were three year olds. And I can still feel that long cold winter walk to Boma School. I wish someone had put together an oral or written history of the Finley Family back when there were folks familiar with the four families. I was told very young that my uncle Dr. Will Finley had traced some of the family back to Ireland but gave up when he found mostly highwaymen, drunks and thieves. Love ya.. Jack
