His life was marked by the tragic sinking of the White Ship in which perish the cream of the nobility and Norman William Adelin, his son and heir to the throne of England.

Henry the first, this along with his brother William Rufus when he died August 2, 1100 in New Forest, taking advantage of the absence of Robert Curthose party deliver the tomb of Christ and the support of the Norman barons, captured the treasure and the royal crown of England.

Henry is officially crowned king of England, August 5, 1100 at Westminster Abbey. To consolidate his power, he promulgated the Charter of Liberties, also called the Coronation Charter , and associated himself with the laws enacted during the reign of King Edward " the Confessor ". On 11 November the same year he married Edith, the daughter of King Malcolm III of Scotland, whom he had four children including William Adelin, his son and heir, and Matilda, future empress.

In 1001, Robert Curthose, returning from the Crusades, tries to take back the throne of England. This unsuccessful attempt ended with the Treaty of Alton by which Robert agreed to recognize Henry as King of England, part-cons of various concessions including an annuity. In 1105, Henry first saw a threat in his brother, crossed the English Channel, beating the ducal army at the Battle of Tinchebray, capturing Robert and imprisoning in England. Duchy of Normandy and the Kingdom of England met again as in the days of the Conqueror, Henry Beauclerc first, recognized Duke of Normandy October 15, 1106, is opposed to the ambitions of the King of France, Louis VI, whom he inflicts excruciating defeats in 1113 and then in 1119 at the Battle of Bremule, forcing the latter to recognize the authority of the King of England on the Maine and Brittany.

November 25, 1120, the White Ship having on board the cream of the nobility and Norman William Adelin, legitimate pretender to the crown of England, was shipwrecked at the edge of the Normandy coast, near the port of Barfleur. Private heir, Henry first swore allegiance to his daughter Matilda by his barons, who at his death, will prefer Stephen of Blois, nephew of Henry son and grandson of the Conqueror.
