-------------------
Robert of Normandy first, second son of Richard II, Count of Hi?mois, has only seventeen when he came to power after having dismissed Nicolas, son of his late brother Richard III died of poisoning. Like its predecessors, Robert of Normandy, during the eight year life of his reign, will not cease to assert its authority and grow the Duchy.
When Robert encircled the crown of the Duke of Normandy, the Duchy is facing insubordination of lords in revolt against the ducal power while, and outside, relations with Britain and England continue to s' fester. This is repentant former rebel , and an iron hand, it imposes its authority and rebellion mate. Thus, in the year 1027, our young Duke stormed the fortress of Alencon, the first binding Talvas William, Earl of Belleme to capitulate in a humiliating manner . A little later, hearing that Bishop Hugh of Bayeux recruits soldiers and strengthens the defenses of the castle of Ivry to challenge his authority, Robert besieged the fortress of Ivry and Hugh of Bayeux strength to negotiate his exile against safe conduct for his fellow prisoners.
Most often absent, busy waging war, Robert, who is unmarried, sees his descendants ensured in the last days of the Year 1027 by the birth of a son named William, born of a union more Frank Cole with a young daughter named Arlette which he was enamored of the time when he was still Count of Hi?mois and he stayed frequently at Falaise.
In 1030, the first Robert of Normandy went into battle against Alain III, count of Rennes and Duke of Brittany, who refuses to swear allegiance. Faced with this refusal, Robert fact fortify the border on the Couesnon before invading Britain. On his return to Normandy, he helped the children of Emma and Ethelred the ill-advised , Alfred and Edward exiles and refugees in Rouen. While leaving the threat of armed intervention in England, he sum Knut the Great to abdicate. This ultimatum unanswered, he gathers a fleet of war in F?camp who, caught in a storm, is swept off Jersey where she will stay for some time before being partly disarmed while others will plunder the ships coast of Brittany around Dol. That's when the Duke of Britain launches offensive against-in the direction of Avranches. Ill take him: his army decimated by the Norman troops led by Alfred Neel and the Giant of St. Saviour, Alain III, defeated, has no alternative but to submit and pay tribute to the Duke of Normandy .
The following year, the death of King Robert the Pious of France, in the same way he had previously taken up the cause of the children of Ethelred and he had intervened in Flanders to bring relief to Count Baldwin IV Robert supports the young King Henry the first his mother Constance tries to dismiss the throne in favor of his younger brother. Henry the first, having succeeded in presenting his case, donated to Robert French Vexin for services rendered.
Brave, generous and cultured, Robert of Normandy, to whom everything seems to succeed, becomes, for all, Robert " the Magnificent , "Robert" the Liberal " . In 1031, peace and prosperity reign in Normandy. This is not counting on famine and plague will befall the Duchy and the following year on the behavior change that Robert in January 1035, probably influenced by the many pilgrimages to the Holy Land who, in early of Millennium, multiply in all Christendom, announces his imminent departure for Jerusalem, not without having first, recognize that his son William, who was still a child as heir to the ducal crown, the unanimity of the Norman barons met in F?camp around the Archbishop of Rouen
After crossing the Alps, then stayed in Rome to Byzantium, Robert arrived in Jerusalem in the spring of 1035. In early summer, when he is on the way back, overcome by the heat, health plagued, Robert the Magnificent died prematurely July 2, 1035 at Nicaea , away from Normandy, whose fate now rests on the shoulders of a child of seven years.
