- BIOGRAPHY: 4th Duke of Normandy.
Surnamed Ponce or Poncius, "Earl of Arques and Thoulouse". {Davis Folio, p2}
----------------------
During the reign of Richard II of Normandy knows both peace and prosperity. Equipped with modern administrative structures, and reformed the clergy under the authority of ducal Normandy figure is from that time, a model in the eyes of the princes of the West.
BIOGRAPHY: In 996 the death of his father Richard Fearless, Richard II of Normandy, called " the Irascible "or" the Good ", a minor, has just taken the turn for the Duchy that his authority is already undermined and that anger is brewing in the countryside.
BIOGRAPHY: William, Earl of Hi?mois and half-brother Richard, refusing to recognize the authority of the latter is captured and imprisoned by Raoul d'Ivry. Private Hi?mois, after being pardoned by his brother, William made peace with Richard who gave him the county of Eu.
BIOGRAPHY: During the same year, while the cities of the Duchy thrive, scarcity prevailing in the country only reinforces the panic that has gripped the western world with the approach of the millennium. Faced with an unprecedented agrarian crisis, starving peasants, united in the Assembly, after unsuccessfully attempting to make their voices heard, rebelled. This is by arms and blood as Raoul d'Ivry silenced the peasants' revolt of the Grove during the year 997.
BIOGRAPHY: In the early days of the year 1000, an incident seemingly innocuous after all be the source of incalculable consequences of events some sixty years later. That year, the English king Ethelred II said the " unwise "goes a punitive expedition against the Duchy of Normandy in order to eradicate the bases of Vikings located in the Cotentin peninsula. This raid repulsed by Neel de Saint Sauveur, Viscount of Cotentin, the Anglo-Saxon troops cut to pieces, Etherel has no alternative but to negotiate a peace treaty with Richard of Normandy; treaty to be sealed in 1002 with betrothal and marriage of his sister Emma with the sovereign of England. Born of this union Edward " the Confessor ", future King of England, whose estate will be settled, a few years later, the night of the famous Battle of Hastings.
BIOGRAPHY: Staunch ally and vassal of the King of France, Richard II is involved in several expeditions in 1006 in Burgundy and Flanders. Robert the Pious, recognizing, supports him in the border conflicts with Maine and Brittany who oppose Fulk Nerra and Eudes of Blois. Besides, Richard II undertook major reforms. It transforms the duchy into a modern state, stable and prosperous. His reign marks the end of the Scandinavian colonization of Normandy. The latest arrivals will melt gradually into the mass. Normandy is now part of Christian civilization without denying it or its origins or its culture that make it unique. Unlike his predecessors who wore the title of Count of Rouen, officially endorses that of Richard Duke of Normandy.
BIOGRAPHY: In 1017, the abbey of Mont Saint-Michel , built at the request of Richard the first, provides a framework for the marriage of Richard II of Normandy and Judith of Brittany, sister of the Count of Rennes. From this union were born six children of whom Richard and Robert that history records under the name Robert " the Magnificent ". Richard II of Normandy dies during the year 1027. He is buried alongside his father at the abbey of the Trinity F?camp. This is his eldest son Richard, who under the name of Richard III of Normandy, then takes over the running of the Duchy. Unfortunately, his reign will be short lived. Indeed, the young Duke found mysteriously dead, 6 August 1027, leaving the duchy of Normandy to his brother Robert suspected of murder.
