BIOGRAPHY: Richard, heir to the Duchy of Normandy was only ten years old when his father William Longsword was murdered in December to 942 Piquigny. A Regency Council shall be nominated but Louis IV d'Outremer, under the guise of protection, is transported to the young Duke of Laon and his court set up men in his pay all over Normandy.

BIOGRAPHY: Louis IV d'Outremer joins Hugh the Great for the young butcher Duchy of Normandy. King tackles Evrecin while Hugh the Great seizes Gace, besieged Bayeux and Evreux. Bernard the Dane managing to convince Hugh the Great of starting a campaign against the king of the Franks and the caller Harald Blue Tooth, King of Denmark to the rescue attracts Louis IV and his army in an ambush.

BIOGRAPHY: In 945, Harald Blue Tooth landed at the mouth of the Dives. With the help of Norman troops, he routs the Frankish army at Varaville. Louis IV d'Outremer, taken prisoner during the battle, fell to Hugh the Great and sees his son being held hostage at Rouen. Meanwhile, with the complicity of Osmond Conteville, Yves Bell?me and Bernard de Senlis, Richard, became a teenager, managed to escape the course of Laon. Back in Rouen, Richard hastens to hunt supporters of Louis IV and made to recognize the independence of the Great Duchy of Carolingian kingdom. Louis IV d'Outremer has not so far spoken its last word. Released in July 946, he did it again and again to attack Normandy. Which, originally, was to be a mere formality becomes a massacre. Coalition forces composed of the Frankish army, armies of the Duke of Burgundy, Arnulf I, Count of Flanders, and the Duke of Brittany Alain Barbetorte are routed in battle and defeat the Rougemare near Rouen.

BIOGRAPHY: The memory of Rougemare is not yet cleared when, in 957, Richard is the subject of an assassination attempt on the part of Lothario, newly crowned king of the Franks. The foiled plot, Richard from the field against Lothair and his allies Breton, promptly brought to reason. Four years later, it again tends a trap to the Normans that this time crushed the royal army. In 965, the Treaty of Gisors ended the hostilities. Lothair renounced all suzerainty over Normandy.

BIOGRAPHY: After beginning his reign a difficult and troubled times, peace finally reigns again on Normandy. In 960, Richard married Emma, ??daughter of Hugh the Great, Duke of France, and was entrusted with the supervision of the future king Hugh Capet. Richard and Emma had not had children, marriage is a "more Frank Cole" with Gunnor Crepon born as Richard, his successor, and Emma of Normandy, the future Queen of England and mother of Edward the confessor.

BIOGRAPHY: During the reign of Richard the first, the ducal power strengthens and builds on the Church that protects and controls. Links with Scandinavia are still clearly visible as shown by the intervention of Harald Blue Tooth in 945. Normandy is a land of welcome and integration for many Vikings in search of home. Normandy found peace and prosperity. Richard is rebuilding and beautifying the cathedral of Notre-Dame de Rouen. It also enriches the abbey of Saint-Ouen and made reform the Mont Saint-Michel where he established a Benedictine community and had built an abbey - Notre-Dame-sous-Terre - on the foundations of the old oratory founded by Aubert. Richard died during the first year 996. He is buried at the Monastery of the Holy Trinity F?camp he, himself, founded a few years ago.
