  	Francis was among the first men in Bryant to enlist in World War I, serving in the First South Dakota Cavalry. He was a First Sergeant, Aero Sqadron 268, stationed in England at the close of the war. He was a crew chief for Eddie Rickenbacker's "Hat in the Ring" squadron towards the end of the war. He was shop foreman for Coon Motors Company and its successor firms in Sioux Falls from 1919 until his death.
