- John HAAGENSEN was the first white boy born in Clifford, ND. He was described as the "Abraham Lincoln physique". As a youth, he saw many wild animals - bears and lynx. Buffalo wallows were all overthe prarie. He saw wagons in all direction of homesteaders gathering he buffalo bones which they took to Portland for fertilizer.
Attendants at his and Christina's wedding were Clara and Fred HAAGENSEN.
He ran many steam engines in the area, and did threshing for other farmers between 1906 and 1921. He tried to farm during hard times. In one season, he planted his crops three times due to the grasshoppers. He farmed near Clifford, Hope, and Luverne. He retired in 1958, then at Hope, ND.
Shortly later, Christina had a stroke. Then John had a stroke and they both moved to Hillsboro Nursing Home.
