HOLMAN, Osvald (Ole) CHRISTENSEN, b. 27 Nov 1846, Thonby, Heggen under Modum Parish, Buskerud County, Norway , d. 3 Dec 1918, Washburn, Bayfield Co., Wisconsin (Age 72 years) |

Abt 1873 |

- Osvald came to the U.S., leaving on 1 June on the Angelo, with his brother John, and nephew Christian (Ole's 15 year old son). His wife and first four children came on 15 August, 1884, on the Rallo, along with John's wife Maren and their seven children.
Both the Angelo and the Rallo left from the port of Christiana (Oslo). Ernest Holmen relates that when his grandmother was asked how she handled the four youngsters on her own during the crossing and in New York, she responded that she had tied them to her with ropes around their waists.
This branch of the family changed their name from HOLMEN to HOLMAN. Osvald was a lumber mill worker. They first spent a short time in Pineville, Michigan, and then travelled to Odanah, Wisconsin, a lumber town of 2000 people. In 1888 they moved to Washburn, Wisconsin, a booming lumber town of 6000. There Osvald worked for Sprague's Sawmill as a laborer. Osvald did take sick during World War I, and died from a heart attack at age 72.
This was a very musical family (probably from Caroline's side), and the five sons all played various horned instruments for both the city and church bands. All but the youngest two girls had died before Dec, 1974. This information was gathered by Ernest Holman, son of Anton, and grandson of Osvald.
The 1900 census lists Ole, Christian, and Carl as as common Laborers. Oscar and John are attending school. In 1910, living at Eight Avenue West in Washburn, Christian, Fred, Oscar, and John are listed as laborers in a saw mill, as is their father. Mathilda is a domestic and Carl is a laborer in a box factory. In 1920, Christian is a laborer in a box factory and John is a salesman in a dry goods store.
Caroline died in Ashland following cancer surgery.
