LONDONDERRY STANDARD

January 12 1867 DEATH OF MR. WM. YOUNG, NEW ZEALAND – We regret to have to record the death of MR. WILLIAM YOUNG, New Zealand, who met his death by a gun-shot from a Maori, whilst defending his property. It appears that the Maoris made an attack on the station, and, no soldiers being there at the time, all the settlers had to defend themselves against their savage assailants, and while thus gallantly engaged, Mr. Young fell a victim. Mr. Young was the eldest son of MR. JAMES YOUNG, of Eden More [Edymore], near Strabane. He emigrated to New Zealand about ’56; he was a young man of great abilities, and very successful in all his undertaking, whilst he never forgot his relatives in his native land. He is greatly lamented by his friends, both at home and in the land of his adoption.
