LONDONDERRY STANDARD

October 7 1840

MELANCHOLY FATE OF JAMES SPROULL, ESQ., LATE OF STRABANE. – Our attention has been directed to a paragraph in the Jamaica Royal Gazette of the 8th of August last, in which the circumstances attending the fate of a gentleman universally esteemed and respected by all who knew him, are detailed. Mr Sproull was about to return to his relatives in Ireland, and had taken his passage in the New Grove, Captain Cousens, which was lost on a reef of dangerous rocks called the Morant Keys. The crew and passengers however, were all saved, with the exception of Mr. Sproull and a boy. The Gazette justly laments the fate of this amiable gentleman in the following words: -

“The fate of Mr. Sproull is to be lamented – He had resided in this Island for a period of thirty-six years – Thirty of which he had acted as overseer and attorney on Stokes Hall Estate, in St. Thomas in the East, where he had endeared himself to many friends, and bore a most exemplary and highly respectable character. In 1836 he retired with his family to the North of Ireland, where in the neighbourhood of Derry, he had purchased property some years before, on which he resided and received high encomiums from the resident landlords, for introducing an active and improved method of husbandry – having to their astonishment brought oats to market, at a season which was never known before in that country. Mr. Sproull returned to this Island a few months ago, to arrange some affairs which he found necessary to attend to personally, had concluded the sale of his properties and was about to return to his wife and family when his career in life was cut short by the unfortunate loss of the vessel in which he was a passenger. His loss will be severely felt by an afflicted family who will wait with anxiety his return – never to be realised”
