[Obituary] THE LATE MR. DAVID SHANNON, J.P.

In Saturday’s Chronicle, we announced the death of this highly esteemed gentleman. Mr. Shannon was a near relative of our townsman Mr. A.J.H. Moody, and emigrated from Magilligan to Australia, upwards of thirty years ago. The Kapunda Herald has a very appreciative article on Mr. Shannon from which we make the following extract: - “Mr. Shannon’s familiar form will be no more seen in our town, or at the gatherings of our various agricultural and other kindred societies. It is but seven weeks since his elder brother, Mr. Abraham Shannon, was conveyed to the tomb, and now at the comparatively early age of fifty-three, Mr. David Shannon, the last surviving member of five full brothers has passed away (deceased’s half brothers surviving him): and we do not exaggerate when we state that the news of his decease will cause sorrow to all who knew him, for his was a kindly and generous nature to all who knew him, and though at times he might be somewhat hasty and impetuous, yet this was amply condoned by the possession of the rare virtue of being willing and anxious to confess his error if his natural temperament had by any means for the time had got the better of his judgement, Mr. Shannon was eminently a practical man, and by diligent attention to the pursuits to which he had devoted himself (agriculture and sheep-farming) had not only attained a position of affluence, but had come to be regarded as an authority on all matters pertaining to those staple interests of the colony. Mr. Shannon spent some thirty-three years of his life in this colony, of which almost nineteen have been passed at Yatara, where he resided up to the time of his death. Mr. David Shannon occupied a seat in the House of Assembly during two sessions, as the representative of the District of Light, and for very many years he was an active member of the Colonial Magistracy – whilst his time and his purse were ever at the service of the many agricultural and kindred societies for at one time this district possessed: for many years he was President or Vice-President of the Kapunda Agricultural Society, and he for one greatly regretted that that Society was allowed to become defunct. Some years back Mr. Shannon was thrown from his horse and sustained injuries which, though at the time regarded as trifling, ultimately resulted in an affection that his undergoing the painful operation of having one of his legs amputated close to the thigh, that operation being performed, if we remember aright, on the 1st of August four years ago. Up to a short time before this he had been a very active man taking a great deal of out-door exercise; but subsequent to this, he had been a very heavy man, had difficulty in walking, even aided by one of the best artificial limbs that could be procured, and as might be expected, his health suffered, though he was still able to attend to his magisterial and other duties.

About five months since, however, he drove to Mount Rufus, being seated in his buggy for about seven years continuously; and the weather being both damp and cold, he contracted a severe cold, which settled in the lower part of his spine, and for the last four months he has been confined to his bed by a complication of diseases, at times suffering excruciating pain, never being able to lie down, but having to be propped up by pillows or supported by the members of his family. His sufferings during the last few weeks have been extreme. On Sunday week fatal symptoms made their appearance, and on Thursday last it became evident he could not survive much longer. At 7 p.m. he ceased to be conscious and just before the midnight hour sounded he passed away to another and a better world. Mr. Shannon (who was twice married) leaves a widow and a family of five sons (of whom the youngest is four years old) and two daughters, with all utmost sympathy is felt in the irreparable loss they have sustained.” (Coleraine Chronicle)
