Jan 7 1859 | Died, in the Main Street of this town (Newtownlimavady), on Saturday last, Miss Amelia Ross, at the great age of 117 years, being born about the year 1741, in the parish of Magilligan, where her ancestors and their descendants have resided for centuries. Her father, however, with his family, became residents in Newtownlimavady about 110 years ago, during which period she was never known to have been absent from the same Place for any length of time. Two of her ancestors, by the maternal side, appear to have been Rectors of the above named Parish, viz. the Rev. Mr. Lees and the Rev. Mr. Racey. The latter was her grandfather. The mental faculties of the deceased remained pretty clear almost to the last, and her memory was wonderful, she having mentioned events which took place at Newtownlimavady more than a century ago, such as the rebuilding of the Parish Church of Drumachose. She lived in the reigns of five sovereigns of Great Britain and Ireland, and was, probably, at the time of her death, the oldest of all her Majesty's subjects |
