Ballad of Mary Neill

Written by M. A. Harron, MSc, MSc.

This article details an Irish Ballad that deals with the true story of a couple who elope and take passage from Derry to Canada.

However,  their ship is wrecked at the mouth of the St. Lawrence River. They are saved and return to Ireland where they are reconciled with the bride's father.

The ballad was adapted somehow and became part of the musical culture of Nova Scotia.  This version is also included in the article.

This article was originally published in the Ulster Historical Publication, Due North, in 1999.
