1. This is a WEEKLY MARKET. It is held every FRIDAY.
2. The Market commences at half past nine o’clock from the 25th March to the 25th September, and at eleven o’clock, from the 25th September to the 25th March.
The Market is usually over in one hour from its commencement.
3. The Market is held in the open street, about the centre of the town.
4. The Webs brought to this Market are of the following kinds:
Three-quarter wides are from fifty-two to eighty yards long, and twenty-eight inches broad, made of Tow Yarn, and of middling quality.
Seven-eighth wides, fifty-two yards long, and thirty-two inches broad, of good quality.
Yard or four-quarter wides, fifty-two yards long, and thirty-seven inches broad, of good quality.
5. The average prices of each description of Linen sold at this Market, are as follow:
Three-quarter wides 7½d. per yard
Seven-eighth wides, 18d. per yard
Four-quarter wides, 2s. 3d. per yard
6. All Linens come to this Market in a brown state. The Yarn is tolerably well bleached.
7. The principal part of these Linens is purchased in this Market, by Buyers who are commonly called Jobbers and taken by them to Derry Market, where they sell them to both principal Merchants and Commissioners; some for the purpose of bleaching in this County, and some for exporting to England in a brown state. Those that are bleached here are sent to the Dublin or London Markets.
The three-quarter wide Webs are mostly exported to Manchester and other parts of England. It is supposed that the seven-eighths wides are both used in England for home consumption, and exported to foreign Countries.
The yard wides are sometimes purchased for Irish consumption, as well as exported.
The seven-eighth wides, and three-quarter wides, are generally used for Shirts, &c.
8. The three-quarter wide Webs are exposed to sale in this Market at half past nine o’clock, and from the 25th March to the 25th September; and from the 25th March, at half past ten o’clock.
9. The average number of Webs sold in this Market, weekly, may be said to be 24 three-quarter wides, 24 seven-eight wides, and six yard wides; the average value of the weekly sales about £160.
10. All the Weavers who attend this Market reside in this County.
11. Fifty-four Weavers, upon an average, attend each weekly Market.
12. Fourteen Buyers, upon an average, attend each weekly Market.
13. Of the fourteen Buyers who attend this Market there is but one Principal; the other thirteen are Dealers, who purchase Linens at this Market and sell them at Derry the next Market-day.
