In Ulster, a bleach green was a specialized open-air field and industrial workspace used to whiten and finish newly woven linen cloth.
• The Process: Woven linen cloth (initially gray) was washed in lye or chemical solutions and then spread out across large grassy fields for weeks.
• The Science: Sunlight reacting with the moisture and grass (chlorophyll) bleached the dark fibers white.
• The Setup: These sites typically covered 25 to 30 acres of land near a river or stream for water power, featuring nearby watch houses, drying lofts, and boiling houses.
