***ORIGINAL SPELLING AND FORMATTING HAS BEEN RETAINED***

Seventeenth century muster rolls are an important source for genealogists. Landlords were required to muster their fit and able-bodied Protestant tenants in preparedness to bear arms and support the British cause. Such tenants were assumed to be aged between the ages of sixteen and sixty.

The fertile Laggan Valley in East Co. Donegal was an area heavily settled by Scots at the time of the Plantation. The following quotation from The Laggan and its Presbyterianism – Rev. Alexander G. Lecky (Belfast, 1905) confirms the great numbers of Scots settled there:

“On the 26th of March 1644, the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland, in a response to a petition from the British in the North of Ireland asking for ministers to come and visit them, appointed four of its members to go over to Ulster to administer the solemn League and Covenant with Gospel ordinances. Two of these commissioners – viz., the Rev. William Adair, minister of Ayr and the Rev. John Weir, minister of Dalserf, in Lanarkshire, came to the Laggan. The first place they visited was Raphoe, where the regiment of Sir Robert Stewart – the body of Yeomanry well known in those days as “the Lagganeers” - and great multitudes from the parishes about met them and received the Covenant with great solemnity.”

A muster of Sir Robert Stewart’s Raphoe tenants survives from 1642, recording these numerous Scots, but surprisingly, this lengthy document also contains the names of many Irishmen who seemed prepared to change sides.
