***Brunswick Clubs were formed by Protestants concerned at the implications of Catholic Emancipation which was granted in 1829***

 

Extracted from the Dublin Evening Post Oct 20 1828

SESKANORE BRUNSWICK CLUB. – At a most respectable MEETING of the Protestant Inhabitants of Seskanore and its Vicinity, convened for the purpose of considering the utility of forming a Branch of the TYRONE CONSTITUTIONAL CLUB, on the 13th OCTOBER, 1828, MERVYN STEWART, Esq. High Sheriff, in the Chair,

1st Resolved Unanimously – “That a Club be now formed, to be called the Seakanore Brunswick Constitutional Club, on the principle of preserving the integrity of our Protestant Constitution as by law established, and in conformity with the regulations adopted by the Brunswick Constitutional Club of Ireland.”

2nd Resolved – …..

5th Resolved – “That the Rev. Andrew Graham be required to act as Secretary, and that Sinclair Perry, Esq., be Treasurer.”

6th Resolved – “That Samuel Vesey, Esq., be requested to accept the office of President; and the Rev. Dr. Vesey, Mervyn Stewart, Esq., John Galbraith, Esq., and William Corry, Esq. Vice-Presidents, with power to add to their number

7th Resolved – “That the following Gentlemen, with power to add to their number, together with the Officers of the Society, do compose the Committee of Management for the affairs of the club, and that five of their number be a quorum, viz:

The HIGH SHERIFF having left the Chair, and the Rev. John Sampson being called thereto, it was unanimously resolved:

“That the cordial thanks of this meeting be given to the High Sheriff for his proper and dignified conduct in the Chair, and for his uniform zeal in standing forward in support of our glorious Constitution in Church and State.”

The meeting then broke up. Highly interested in the proceedings of the day, and determined to support with life and property the Protestant Constitution in church and State, giving three cheers for, “No Surrender to Popery.”
