***Brunswick Clubs were formed by Protestants concerned at the implications of Catholic Emancipation which was granted in 1829***

At a numerous and respectable Meeting of the Parishioners of KILLYMAN, held at VERNER’S BRIDGE, on Monday, the 20th October, for the purpose of forming a Brunswick Constitutional Club of Ireland.

JACKSON LLOYD, Esq., in the Chair,

 

The following Resulutions were unanimously entered into: -

1st Resolution –

Proposed by the Rev. R.N. Horner, and seconded by George E. Stuart, Esq. – That the present crisis imperatively calls upon us to declare that we are unalterably attached to the Constitution of this Realm as established at the Revolution in 1688; and that we are determined to defend the same against all opposers and to resist by every lawful means all those who would subvert or disturb it; and that highly approving of the patriotism, zeal and wisdom which have called forth the Brunswick Clubs of Ireland – we are met to establish a Club in our parish upon the same principle, that od preserving the integrity of the Constitution, to be denominated the Brunswick Constitutional Club of Killyman.

2nd – Proposed by Joseph Greer, Esq., seconded by the Rev. James Phelan

That such persons now present as shall subscribe to the above Resolution, be admitted members of the Club, and that all persons wishing hereafter to become members be eligible on the recommendation of three of the Committee.

3rd – proposed by Richard Lloyd, Esq., seconded by Mr. John McElroy

That this Club have Joint-Presidents, Secretaries, Treasure and Committee of Management.

4th – Proposed by Henry Atkinson, Esq., seconded by John O’Neill, Esq. –

That the Hon. Vesey Knox, and Lieutenant-Colonel Verner be requested to become Joint-Presidents.

5th – Proposed by Surgeon Dawson, seconded by Lieutenant McClean –

That the

Be requested as Vice Presidents, with power to add to their number. That Henry Atkinson, jun., John Giffard King, and John O’Neill Esqrs. Be Secretaries, and Richard Lloyd, Esq., Treasurer; and that the following Gentleman be a Committee of Management, with power to their number, viz. –

6th – Proposed by Thomas Dawson, Esq., seconded by Thomas Irwin, Esq. –

That the subscription to this Club be paid annually in advance, and that it shall be not less than two shillings.

7th – Proposed by the Rev. James Phelan, seconded by Harding Giffard King, Esq. –

That in establishing this Club we are not actuated by a feeling of hostility, but of cordial good-will towards our Roman Catholic neighbours and fellow-subjects, whose real interests no less than our own will be best secured by the continuance of the existing Constitution.

8th – Proposed by Henry Atkinson, jun. Esq., seconded by James Irwin, Esq. –

That Captain Lloyd do leave the Chair, and the Rev. James Phelan do take the same.

9th – Proposed by John Giffard King, Esq., seconded by Captain Dawson – That the thanks of the meeting are justly due and are hereby given to Captain Lloyd, for his very proper conduct in the Chair; and for the able and steady support which he has on this and every other occasion given to the cause of Protestantism.

10th – Proposed by Mr. Simon Bortree, seconded by Mr. William McElroy

That these resolution be published in the Dublin Evening Mail, the Warder, and the Belfast Guardian.
