***Brunswick Clubs were formed by Protestants concerned at the implications of Catholic Emancipation which was granted in 1828***
Extracted from the Belfast News Letter November 28 1828
On Monday last, at 1 o’clock, a Meeting was held in Cookstown, for the formation of a Brunswick Club. In consequence of the numbers who attended, it was found necessary to adjourn the meeting from Espy’s large room to a commodious and extensive area which is usually occupied as a flesh market. There a temporary platform had been erected, and chairs placed on it for the different speakers.
The Rev. Richard Stewart, of Drumshambo, was called to the Chair. The following are some of the gentlemen we observed on the platform:
Name Name Col. CAULFEILD Edward H. CAULFEILD, Esq., Loye House Robert LINDSAY, Esq., Loughry W. Lenox CONYNGHAM, Esq., Springhill James LOWRY, Esq., Rockdale Major William IRVINE George E.
