Brunswick Clubs were formed to deny Catholic Access to Parliament

STRABANE BRUNSWICK CLUB. At a meeting held in the town of Strabane, on the 31st day of October, 1828, for the purpose of forming a Brunswick Club, Charles George Stanhope, Esq. of Urney Park, being unanimously called to the Chair, The following Resolutions were moved and adopted:

1st Resolution: Moved by the Rev. Stewart Hamilton, and seconded by John Chambers, Esq. That a Club be formed, to be called “The Brunswick Constitutional Club of the Town and Neighbourhood of Strabane,” on the principle of preserving the integrity of our Protestant Constitution.

2nd Resolution: Moved by the Rev. James Gamble, and seconded by William Elliott, Esq. That such persons now present as subscribe to the foregoing Resolutions, be Members of the Club, and that the amount of annual subscriptions, be for Presidents £1, for Members of the Committee, 5s, and for the other Members not less than 1s.; and that all persons who may hereafter wish to become Members of the Club, be eligible on the recommendation of three Members of the Committee.

3rd Resolution: Moved by the Rev. Robt. Collis, and seconded by Richard Cowan Chambers, Esq. That the Club have Presidents, Secretaries, a Treasurer, and a Committee of Management.

4th Resolution: Moved by the Rev. Edward Marks, and seconded by Carlisle Henderson, Esq. That the Rev. Stewart Hamilton, and the Rev. James Jones, be requested to accept the office of Presidents, That Theophilus Jones, Esq. and the Rev. Robert Scott, be requested to act as Joint Secretaries, That Charles George Stanhope, Esq. be requested to act as Treasurer; and the following Persons, with the Officers already mentioned, with power to add to their number, do compose a Committee of Management:

5th Resolution: Moved by the Rev. William Knox, and seconded by the Rev. Richard Herbert Nash, D.D. That the Presidents, Officers, Committee, and all Members of the Club, will particularly impress upon Protestants of all Classes the necessity of abstaining from offence or insult in their language or behaviour towards any of his Majesty’s subjects, and of paying every respect to the laws, in all their modes of exhibiting their principles, or maintaining their opinions.

6th Resolution---- Moved by Robert Cochran, and seconded by James Sloan, Esqrs. That the foregoing Resolutions be published in The Warder, Dublin Evening Mail, Londonderry Journal, and Strabane Morning Post.

Captain Stanhope, having moved out of the Chair, and the Rev. Stewart Hamilton called thereto, the thanks of the Meeting were unanimously given to Captain Stanhope for his highly proper and dignified conduct in the Chair.
