Crozier, Francis

The older man and woman in the postcard are Francis Crozier and Ellen Devlin. Francis was born in Moortown, Co. Tyrone 22 Dec 1843, son of Henry Crozier and Molly Quinn. Ellen was born 10 Apr 1850 in Tamnavally Townland, Co. Tyrone, daughter of James Devlin and Sarah McKeown. They were married 24 Nov 1871 in Coagh. On 3 May 1873, they arrived in New York City with their son Mark, age 7, and settled in Valley Falls (Cumberland), Rhode Island and raised a family of 10 children (one of whom died very young).

This postcard was sent to their daughter Elizabeth in August 1909. I have found immigrations records indicating that they traveled from Liverpool England to NY in July 1909, so the timing makes sense. I am not sure who the young people in the photo are. I assume they are family members who lived in NY and whom they visited on their travels. Some recent anecdotal evidence about Francis from his late granddaughter: It is interesting that my grandfather is listed in some family research documents as a fisherman. In the USA, he found employment at the Ann & Hope Mill and was a foreman of some sort. He owned the family home on Forest Avenue plus another multiple family dwelling on Forest Avenue. One history told us he was a bit of a political boss in Valley Falls but never ran for public office. My brother could not verify this bit of lore shared with him by an elderly parishioner (no church records). The beautiful stained glass window over the altar at St. Patrick’s in Cumberland, RI allegedly was given by the Crozier family. Many immigrants from Tyrone boarded at the home of Francis Crozier and found work in the textile mills of Cumberland, RI.
