HISTORY OF FIRST RAPHOE PRESBYTERIAN CONGREGATION
Extracted from A History of Congregations in the Presbyterian Church in Ireland 1610-1982 (Presbyterian Historical Society of Ireland, Belfast, 1982)
FIRST RAPHOE
This congregation is one of the early Presbyterian settlements of Ulster. Bishop Knox, who was placed in the Episcopal See about the time of the Plantation of Ulster, encouraged Scotsmen to become tenants on the Episcopal lands: and thus it is to this very day so many of the farmers in the parish are Presbyterians. The meeting-house was originally built at Convoy, and until about the middle of the eighteenth century, there was no Presbyterian place of worship in Raphoe. About that time Raphoe was erected into a separate congregation, and the old congregation was henceforth known by the name of Convoy.
The first minister of the newly erected congregation of Raphoe was Rev. James Gordon, who had formerly been minister of Castleblaney [Co. Monaghan], and who was installed here in Aug. 1751. He died in this charge in 1785 and was succeeded by Mr. William Ramsay (lic. 1784) who was ordained on 24 Aug. 1786. Mr. Ramsay died on 16 April 1827 and was succeeded by Mr. William Dool Killen (lic. Ballymena 1827) who was ordained here on 11 Nov. 1829. During his stay the Episcopal Cathedral was so badly damaged by fire that the parishioners were granted the use of the Presbyterian Church for nearly a year. On 12 Oct. 1841 Mr. Killen resigned the charge of this congregation on his appointment of Ecclesiastical History in the Presbyterian College, Belfast.
He was succeeded by Mr. John Thomson (lic. Down Sec[ession]. 1841) who was ordained here on 19 Jan. 1843. Shortly after the settlement of Mr. Thomson in this charge, the second congregation was organised. The old place of worship, built fully a century before, had meanwhile become somewhat dilapidated, and under the ministry of Mr. Thomson a new and handsome Presbyterian Church had been erected on the site of the former edifice. Mr. Thomson having become infirm, Mr. John Alexander Bain was ordained his assistant on 12 Aug 1884. Mr. Thomson died on 26 June 1890.
Mr. Bain resigned on 20 June 1892 when he accepted a call to Westport and Newport [Co. Mayo], and was succeeded by Rev. Samuel Meek (lic. Belfast 1890) who was ordained on 29 Mar. 1893. The minister of 2nd Raphoe having died in Aug. 1922, a long series of meetings was held by both congregations, and agreement to amalgamate on 8 Aug. 1923. One of the terms of agreement was that the two churches would until otherwise decided, be used on alternate Sundays for services and Sabbath School.
RAPHOE: FIRST AND SECOND
After the decision in Aug. 1923 to amalgamate these two congregations, Rev. Samuel Meek retired on 1 Nov. 1929, because of ill-health, and the now reunited congregation called Mr. Joseph Percival Connery (lic. Belfast 1921) as its minister. He was ordained on 2 January 1924 and resigned when called to Glenwherry [Co. Antrim] on 17 Sept. 1929. The Rev. William Frederick Shepherd, who followed Mr. Connery, had been licensed in Princetown (sic) USA, and then received by the Rathfriland Presbytery [Co. Down]. He was installed in Raphoe on 14 May 1930 and served the congregation faithfully and well until his retirement on 7 Feb. 1961. He retired to Bangor and died 13 June 1970.
The Second Raphoe church ceased to be used for services at the end of 1949, and in a short time became the recreation hall for the youth of the congregation. It is also used for the monthly sittings of the District Court.
The next minister was Mr. Robert McCausland Bell (lic. Belfast 1956), son of Mr. S. D. Bell of Bangor, a prominent elder and trustee of the Presbyterian Church. Mr. Bell was installed in 31 May 1961, and when later called to Kilraughts [Co. Antrim], he resigned on 15 Nov. 1971. During his ministry he was appointed stated supply of the vacant congregation of Ballindrait. In the vacancy which followed the congregations of Raphoe and Ballindrait became united.
