PRESBYTERIANISM IN BALLYLENNON: A BRIEF HISTORY
Extracted from the Londonderry Sentinel February 21 1968
A brief sketch of the history of Ballylennon is given by the late Professor W. D. Killen D.D., in his history of Presbyterian congregations in Ireland.
Professor Killen states that the people of the Ballylennon district (situated half-way between St. Johnston and Raphoe) was mostly Presbyterians and had long felt the inconvenience of being so remote from a house of worship being three Irish miles distant from either of the places mentioned.
About 1826 they began to think of obtaining more accessible church accommodation, but there were adherents of the Secession Synod, as well as the Synod of Ulster, in the locality and the rivalry of the two bodies created considerable difficulty.
The Seceders, however first occupied the ground and, at the end of September, 1829, Mr. John Lecky, was ordained as minister of the Secession Church. A house of worship was soon erected and, not long afterwards, another made its appearance in the immediate neighbourhood, but on the opposite side of the road. It was built by the adherents of the Synod of Ulster.
In February 1835, Mr. George Hanson, was ordained to the ministry of the second congregation and both he and Mr. Lecky reached old age in the ministry and required assistance in their duties. Meantime, the Secession Synod and the Synod of Ulster were united in the General Assembly, and the two congregations – both comparatively small – wisely resolved to unite under the son of Mr. Lecky whom the people of both congregations had known from his childhood . Mr. Alex. G. Lecky was installed as minister of the united congregations of Ballylennon in December, 1875.
On the death of Rev. A. G. Lecky, the congregation of Ballylennon and Ballindrait were linked together under the Rev. (now Rev. Dr.) J. H. Bewglas, who has now retired.
