Taughboyne Parish Church and Graveyard in the early twentieth century (Photo: thanks to Monreagh Heritage Centre Facebook page)

This ancient graveyard has long been the burial place of Taughboyne parishioners. Since pre-Plantation times, every family residing within the parish was allocated a burial plot; Church of Ireland, Presbyterian and Roman Catholic all lying side by side.

It has been possible to identify one hundred and ninety-eight gravestones and transcribe their inscriptions, however many plots contain no headstone or field stone (often used as markers) and it is not possible to identify ownership in such instances. Unfortunately, the pre 1820 burial register had been forwarded to Dublin where it was lost in the destruction of the old Public Record Office in 1922. The surviving burial register for the years 1820-1900 has been transcribed and uploaded and may be found at www.cotyroneireland.com/burial/taughboyne2.html

Numerous families of long-standing have several graves indicating their length of presence in Taughboyne and their several branches may be identified by the inclusion of the name of the townland within the inscription.

Many old families of the parish with identifiable gravestones can be found recorded in the 1663 Taughboyne Hearth Money Roll: ALEXANDER, ALLEN, CAMPBELL, COLHOUN, COWAN, DAVISON, EWING, FULTON, GALBRAITH, GALLAUGHER, GAMBLE, GILLILAND, HAMILTON, HARVEY, LATTA, LINDSAY/ LYNDSAY, MARSHALL, MCCLINTOCK, MOTHERWELL, RANKIN, SCOTT, WARK and WRAY.

Several seventeenth and eighteenth gravestones are exceedingly attractive and elaborately decorated, particularly those belonging to Matthew Lyndsay (d. 1680), Andrew Lindsay (d. 1712) and the Gallaugher family of Ruskey.
