REV. PROF. JAMES DICK
James Dick was born in Strabane on 7 November 1799. His father, Alexander Dick, was a Merchant in Strabane and an elder in Bready who was said to have “exerted a notable influence on behalf of doctrinal soundness, and of the very sternest type of uprightness of demeanour.” Long after his death it was said of him:
Some of the oldest members still mention his name with much respect,
As having long been an appreciable power for good in that locality…To
the Church, which was about six miles distant, he walked, even in his
age, with the utmost regularity; and the strength of his personal influence
may be learned from the fact that a considerable crowd of both old and
young invariably joined him on his way to and from the sanctuary,
hanging with eager attention on the solemn and instructive words with
which he beguiled for them the tediousness of the way. Long after his
death, many members of the congregation were wont to say of him, in a
tone of fervour and thankfulness. “We took sweet counsel together, and
walked unto the house of God in company.”
Alexander Dick died on 28 November 1846 in his 85th year and was buried in the churchyard at Patrick Street, Strabane. Just over a year before, on 13 November 1845, a Dr John Dick, son of Mr A. Dick of Strabane died on a voyage from Calcutta to Demerara.
