The Strabane Morning Post
26 July 1836
On Wednesday, the 20th instant. in the 73d year of her age, after a lingering illness, which she bore with Christian fortitude and pious resignation, Martha, relict of the late Mr. John Arbuckle, merchant, of this town. She was an affectionate parent, and a sincere, humble follower of her Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ.
Printed Memorial for Martha Arbuckle
SACRED
To the Memory of
MARTHA,
Relict of the late Mr. John Arbuckle,
of Strabane,
who exchanged a temporal for an eternal condition
on the 20th day of July, 1836,
in the 74th year of her age,
After a lingering illness, borne with the pious resignation and fortitude
of a Christian.
She was dutiful wife, an affectionate parent, and a
sincere and humble follower of her
LORD JESUS CHRIST.
For many years it was hers' to bow in secret and enjoy communion before Him whose face none ever sought in vain; and her parting advise to those, who in her last hours surrounded her dying pillow, was to live to Him whose life was laid down for their sakes, and all would be well.
Though now deprived of her loyal society, her relatives can rejoice in the thought that she is now a blessed conqueror, absent from the body, from its pains, and from its cares; sickness and langour shall no more afflict her, for the feeble dwelling of langour and pain lies far beneath in the unconscious dust; care and pain will no more obtrude upon her. These are all forgotten, unless remembered to heighten her heavenly bliss. "Absent from the body." In vain, then, the once dear, still dear object, do we sorrow over you. She is departed. She is not in the dust. There rests her forsaken dwelling; but she is not there. She is gone. The tomb does not contain our treasure; she is now a Saint on high, whom we lament below.
"Forgive, ye blest, the tributary tear
That mourns your exit from a world like this;
Forgive the wish that would have kept you here,
And stayed your progress to the world of bliss."
"No more confined to darksome realms of night,
No more frail tenant pent in mortal clay;
Now should we rather hail your glorious flight,
And trace your progress to the realms of day."
Let Faith, then, follow after her, and will we follow after her e're long; let Faith trace her progress to brighter worlds. It is true, she is absent from the body, but she is present with the Lord. Though absent, she is not lost; though removed from us, she is removed to better society, and fairer scenes.
"Worlds would not bribe thee back to tread
Again life's dreary waste,
To see again your sky o'erspread
With all the gloomy past."
