Goudy, Alexander Porter
by Thomas HamiltonGOUDY, ALEXANDER PORTER, D.D. (1809–1858), Irish presbyterian divine, son of the Rev. Andrew Goudy (presbyterian minister of Ballywalter, co. Down, from 1802 to 1818), by Matilda, daughter of the Rev. James Porter of Greyabbey (who was executed in 1798 for supposed complicity in the designs of the United Irishmen), was born near Ballywalter in February 1809, and, after attending school at the Belfast Academical Institution, entered its collegiate department in November 1823. He distinguished himself in several of the classes, and gained some reputation in the college debating society, where his chief rival was Thomas Hagan, afterwards Lord-chancellor O'Hagan. He was licensed by the presbytery of Bangor 29 Dec. 1830, and ordained as assistant and successor to the Rev. James Sinclair of Glastry (not far from his birthplace), 20 Sept. 1831. On 20 March 1833 he was installed in Strabane, where he continued minister till his death. In 1839 he became involved in a somewhat notable controversy on the merits of episco- pacy. The Rev. Archibald Boyd [q. v.], then curate in Derry Cathedral, subsequently dean of Exeter, had issued ‘Sermons on the Church’ in 1838, in which he attacked presbyterianism. In 1839 four ministers of the synod of Ulster, of whom Goudy was one, published a reply entitled ‘Presbyterianism Defended, and the Arguments of Modern Advocates of Prelacy examined and refuted.’ The other authors were the Revs. W. D. Killen of Raphoe, afterwards professor of church history in the assembly's college, Belfast, William McClure and James Denham, ministers in Londonderry. Boyd having replied in a book entitled ‘Episcopacy, Ordination, Lay Eldership, and Liturgies, in five letters,’ the four ministers published ‘The Plea of Presbytery,’ which soon became a standard work on the subject. This Boyd reviewed in ‘Misrepresentation Refuted,’ which called forth ‘Mene Tekel’ from the four ministers. The last work in the controversy was by Boyd, and was entitled ‘Episcopacy and Presbytery.’ Goudy's part in this battle of the books was very ably done. Shortly after he took a large share in the agitation caused by a decision of the House of Lords (elicited by an appeal from the Irish courts), which affirmed the invalidity of a marriage celebrated by a presbyterian minister, where one of the parties was an episcopalian, an agitation which was ended by the passing of the Marriages (Ireland) Act (7 & 8 Victoria, chap. 81), which legalises all such marriages. From this time Goudy took rank as one of the leading debaters in his church, and had a prominent part in all its business. In 1851 he received the degree of D.D. from Jefferson College, U.S. In 1857 he became moderator of the general assembly. He died unexpectedly in Dublin 14 Dec. 1858. In addition to the works mentioned above he published several sermons and pamphlets.
Rev. James Porter lies buried in Greyabbey graveyard. His grisly end merits another prosaic paragraph in the Belfast News Letter of 21 July 1798: ‘The Rev James Porter, Dissenting Minister of Greyabbey, found guilty, also sentenced to be executed on the 20th, which was put in execution yesterday at the rear of his own Meeting House at Greyabbey – head not severed.’
Porter, James, Rev., a distinguished United Irishman, was born about 1760, at Ballindrait, in the County of Donegal. After completing his theological studies at Glasgow, he was appointed Presbyterian minister of Grey Abbey, near Belfast, in 1784 or 1785. Five years afterwards he married. He was a good classical scholar. His library was extensive, and his scientific instruments and museum for the illustration of natural philosophy were superior to anything else of the kind then in the north of Ireland. Of an enthusiastic and liberal mind, he entered the Society of the United Irishmen. At first moderate in his views, seeking only Catholic Emancipation and Parliamentary Reform, he advanced with the progress of events, and being a good public speaker, and having a ready pen, soon took a foremost place in the movement. His writings in the Northern Star and Press were forcible and trenchant. He took the field with the insurgents in June 1798, was arrested for participation in the attack on Saintfield, tried by court-martial, and executed at Grey Abbey, in sight of his church and home. He suffered with fortitude. He was buried in Grey Abbey churchyard, where a marble slab marks his resting-place.

On Thursday last, at Moville [Co. Donegal], where she had been for some time, for the benefit of the sea, MRS. ISAAC GRAHAM, of this town, most deservedly regretted by all who knew her. Her remains were brought to Strabane on Saturday last, and a vast number who met the funeral procession gave melancholy evidence of the general esteem in which she was held. Her illness had been long protracted, and was submitted to with a degree of piety and resignation calculated to give every comfort and consolation to her extensive circle of friends and relatives. Her removal will be generally felt, as she was always an active supporter of all the charitable and benevolent institutions within the sphere of her influence.

Strabane Morning Post
Date Notice July 8 1828 After a short illness, on Thursday last, ROBERT VALENTINE GWYNNE, second son of MR. RICHARD GWYNNE, of this town at the early age of nine years. - “In the morning it is green and groweth up: but in the evening it is cut down, dried up, and withered.”
Seldom have we witnessed lowered into the narrow house a child more generally or deservedly regretted - as was fully testified by the number of his companions and others who accompanied his remains to the grave. This reminds us of the awful truth, that “in the midst of life we are in death”, and that in this world our days are as grass and of short duration. We know not the day nor the hour when the withering grasp of death may seize upon us - when the thread of life may be torn asunder, nor when that voice will call upon us to come and give an account of the deeds done in the body: - for “man cometh up as a flower, and is cut down; he fleeth as it were a shadow, and continueth not.”
Pause here and think: a monitory rhyme
Demands one moment of thy fleeting time
Consult life’s silent clock, thy bounding vein;
Seems it to say - ‘Health here has long to reign?
Hast thou the vigour of thy youth? An eye
That beams delight? a heart untaught to sigh?
Yet fear. - Youth of times, healthful and at ease,
Anticipates a day it never sees;
And many a tomb, like Hamilton’s, aloud
Exclaims - ‘Prepare thee for an early shroud’.
