Urney Schools - On Thursday last, the 28th December, the pupils of the Urney Sunday school, and Mr. and Mrs. Hume's private school, were entertained at dinner, in the school-house, at Urney, by the directions of Mr. and Mrs. Hume, according to their invariable custom at this time of year. Above eighty children, besides the teachers, were regaled with a superabundant dinner of beef, vegetables, bread, pudding, and a plintiful supply of ale. The Curates of Urney parish, the Rev. Vincent Beatty Smyth and the Rev. Wm. Coddington, presided; and , after dinner was ended, and grace pronounced, addressed the assembled pupils, pointing out to them the value of a sound scriptural education, and the opportunity afforded them of acquiring it, by the benevolent exertions of their worthy patron and patroness. Three cheers, long and loud, were then given for Mr. and Mrs. Hume, and the youthful party separated, after an evening of the highest enjoyment.
Note: In the mid-1800's, it was common across Britain and Ireland to allow children to drink some ale. The drinking water supply could be variable whereas beer having been brewed was therefore seen as safer.
