THE LITTLE FAMILY

William Carruthers Little, a native of Pitchcome, near Stroud, Gloucestershire, England, settled on Lot 8, Concession 13, in 1837, on the old Essa Road [in Innisfil Twp, Simcoe Co. Ontario, Canada]. He had previously been a sailor and land surveyor in Australia. He married Mary Hamil, daughter of Edward Hamil who lived on a farm close by on Concession 13 and who came from Stewartstown, County Tyrone, Ireland.

The one and one-half storey log house is still standing, being owned and occupied at the present time by William E. Johnston.

 

In 1865 a house was built on Lot 6, Concession 13, at Little's Hill on the pre s ent Essa Road which is now owned and occupied by George W. Anderson.

W. C. Little was a member of the Innisfil Municipal Council and a representative on the County Council at various times from 1853 to 1868. In 1867, at Confederation he was elected Conservative member for South Simcoe holding this seat until his death in 1881. In 1873, following the Pacific Scandal, he was the only Conservative in Ontario to receive an acclamation.

His first wife died and in 1869 he married Mary Harriett Bennett a daughter of William Bennett a native of London, England, who had settled at Claremont, Pickering Township, County of Ontario, in 1833.

His son, Edward A. Little, lived at Little's Hill his entire life with his sisters Christina C. and M. J. Gertrude. None of the three married.

He was the Conservative Representative for Cardwell in the Provincial House from 1894 to 1906 when he became Registrar of the Surrogate Court for the County of Simcoe. He died in 1934.

A son, Alfred T. Little, practised medicine in Churchill from 1885 to 1906 when he moved to Barrie. He was appointed first Medical Officer of Health for Innisfil in 1887. He married J. Maude R. Armson of Bradford, daughter of John W. Armson and the granddaughter of William Armson a native of Nottingham, England, a soldier in the Peninsular War, who settled near Bradford in the early Eighteen-Twenties and who was one of the first Wardens of Simcoe County. Doctor Little died in 1938.

A son, William C. Little, went to Ottawa and at his retirement was Chief Clerk in the Department of Railways and Canals. At one time he was Captain of the Ottawa Rough Riders football team. He died in 1934.

A son, Robert H. Little, married Sarah J. Gibson, daughter of William Gibson, a native of Northern Ireland who settled on Concession 11 near Holly. He was in the Postal Service in Toronto. He died in 1934.

A son, Arthur B. Little, lives at Lot 7, Concession 13, at the present time. In 1910 he married I. Florence Miller, daughter of William Miller a native of County Derry, Ireland, who settled on Lot 8, Concession 12.

His son William E. Little, in 1950, married Marjorie Marie Wiley, daughter of Thomas Wiley who lived in Essa near Grumble Hill and whose father came from County Armagh, Ireland. They live on the farm with his parents.

A daughter, Grace Charlotte, in 1905 married James W. Scott, son of J. G. Scott an old, well known resident of Barrie, and lives in Barrie at the present time.

The Littles are Anglican and the family plot is at St. Paul's Cemetery, Innisfil.
