In 1878, James Gallaher, a struggling draper from Ramelton, Co. Donegal set out with his family to join the plantation settlement scheme promoted by George Vasey Stewart at Katikati, on the Bay of Plenty, North Island, New Zealand. His third son, Dave, went on to captain the 1905-06 All Blacks hugely successful rugby tour of Europe and North America. Dave Gallaher lost his life at the Battle of Passchendaele, Belgium in 1917.
