Friday March 6
Rev. Owen McCaul, P. McDermott, S. Maguire, John Maguire and Michael Doherty, were indicted for an assault on two persons of the name of Dunlop (Alexander and John); and the plaintiffs in the case were also charged with an assault on the defendants (August 19, at Lettergreen), but the Grand Jury ignored the indictment. The Learned Judge (Pennefather) charged the Jury at considerable length; and directed them to weigh well the evidence on both sides. The Jury retires for a few minutes, and brought in a verdict of guilty against the Priest and his party. The following are their different sentences: - The Rev. Mr. McCaul to three weeks’ imprisonment, and to pay a fine of £50, and to be further imprisoned till that fine be paid; John Maguire, to three months’ imprisonment and hard labour; Michael Doherty, to three months’ imprisonment and hard labour; and McDermott to three weeks’ imprisonment, and hard labour.

Saturday, March 7
This morning the Hon. Baron Pennefather took his seat at half-past nine o’clock, when James Lunny, John Balfour, George Balfour, Robert Crozier, Joseph Crozier, Robert Crozier, jun., George Heatley, James Rooney, John Holmes, Patrick Kenny, William Kenny, John Cranston, John Gallogly, John Lanny [Lunny?], William Acheson, John Acheson, and William Lunny stood indicted with having marched with colours and music in party procession near Mackin, on the 12th July last………immediately after the address of the learned counsel, his Lordship charged the jury, who having retired for about one hour, returned a verdict of Not Guilty, which created a sensation of joy among a crowded court, who listened to the whole trial with breathless anxiety awaiting the result.
