A BRIEF HISTORY 1832-1976

In 1832, Dr. John Brown of Aghadowey suggested a preaching station in the border district which included portions of Garvagh, Kilrea and Aghadowey, but in 1834 the cause ran into difficulties over a site. However, the local people procured a site in Moneydig, and in July 1835 reported that they were proceeding with the building of a church and asked for supplies. The first minister was Mr. Patrick Killough who was ordained on 12 Dec. 1837. He died on 21 Aug. 1856 and was succeeded by Mr. Henry H. Finlay (lic. Coleraine) who was ordained 30 June 1857. He resigned 3 Apr. 1863 on his appointment by the Board of Missions to go to Australia. Mr. William McCay (lic. Belfast) was ordained on 3 Nov. 1863. He retired on 7 Nov. 1916 and died 9 Aug. 1921.
Mr. William Bell Stewart (lic. Aghoghill) was ordained on 4 April 1917.He served as a Chaplain 1917/19 and resigned from Moneydig on 30 July 1922. Rev. William John Latimer minister of Carnone [Co. Donegal], was installed 4 July 1923, and resigned 15 Apr. 1931 on accepting a call to Ballycairn. He was the son of Rev. W.T. Latimer, D.D., of Eglish [Co. Tyrone] and grandson of Rev. John Latimer of Ballynahatty [Co. Tyrone]. During Mr. Latimer’s ministry the congregation bought the house which has since served as a manse.
The sixth minister was Rev. Gordon Thompson Campbell Clements, D.D., minister of Donore [Dublin-, who was installed 31 Dec. 1931. He retired on 3 June 1936 and died 6 July 1936. Rev. Henry Cooke Stuart was installed 8 Oct. 1936, having been previously minister of Donoughmore [Co. Donegal], and then minister in New Zealand. He was the son of the Rev. Joseph C. Stuart of Clare [Co. Armagh]. He retired from Moneydig on 31 Jan. 1959 and died on 9 Jan. 1972. Mr. James Warden (lic. Derry) was ordained on 30 July 1959 and resigned on 31 July 1963 on accepting a call from the United Church of Canada at Tavistock. Rev. Ernest James Ferguson, minister of Knowhead, Fahan and Inch, was installed on 23 Jan. 1964. A church hall was built in 1971. Mr. Ferguson retired on 30 June 1976.
The choice then fell on Rev. Aylmer Ernest Armstrong of Dungiven who was installed on 28 July 1976.
