Leck=”A Great Stone,” a parish in the Barony of Raphoe. It is called Lackovenan in the Inquisition of 1609. Magevan was herenach and held one quarter of land for which he paid the Bishop 13/4 per annum and 8 meathers of butter and 32 of meal, and also out of the Bishop’s third of tithes he paid him 26/8. The Dean was Rector and Vicar.

In the Civil Survey of 1654, Wm. Bassill, Attorney General, heir to Martin B., E.P. held 1.445 acres being part of 4,000 acres purchased from Robert Harrington; of this, Edward Hill holds 2 T.L.’s as a freehold for ever and Robert Gorrell 2 T.L.’s given to his father for ever. Capt. Thomas Coach, E.P. 1,402 ac. As heir to his father of which Richard fford holdeth half of T.L. as freehold for 3 lives and Stephen Marshal the other half by mortgage; Sir Wm. Gore, E.P., held 432 acres and the Church lands were held on lease from 1635 by the heirs of Sir W. Semple, and by Wm. Whittaker, Thos. Dutton, James Cunningham; ‘beseiger of Derry” and the heirs of Wm. Latham

In 1661, James Lesly was Parish Clerk, Andrew Dunn and William Moore, Churchwardens. In 1664 Charles Dunbar was Parish Clerk. In 1679 William Henderson was Parish Clerk, Michael Boyle and Wm. McGranaghan, Churchwardens, James Peoples and Brian O’Skenan, Inquisitors (V.B.).

In 1729 the Church needs some repairs which the parishioners are about to undertake. A Curate resides. H. Comm. 4 times a year. Dudley McLaughlin, Parish Clerk, Charles McLaughlin, Eng. School Master.

In 1733, the Church now in good order, slated, chancel flagged.40 boys in the school; the Bishop has granted a house for the Master and two acres of land for ever. (V.B.)

In 1766, there were 206 Protestant and 168 R.C. families and a R.C. priest Hugh Coyle in the parish (Parl. Ret.)

The Glebe house was built in 1820. It and 31 acres were bought by R.C.B. in 1870 for £511 18s 0d.

A new Church was built c1840 at a cost of £749 8s 2d.

The old Churchyard of Leck is vested in the Local Burial Board
