Early in the 1850s the United Presbyterian Church of Scotland kept a Scripture Reader in these parts. U.P. licentiates were used to supply a mission station at Sixtowns, Co. Derry, and they held an occasional service here in Crockatanty, about fifteen miles from Cookstown. A Mr. Lawry had extensive sheep farming and he brought over a number of Scottish shepherds. They and their families formed the bulk of the congregation. A church was erected and some time later the Mission Board of the Presbyterian Church in Ireland took charge of it.
Mr. James McIntosh (lic. Dromore 1870) was ordained as a Home Missionary on 10 May 1872, but died in August of the same year. The services were conducted by licentiates till Mr. Archibald Beattie (lic. Raphoe) was ordained on 24 May 1876. He accepted a call from Lowtherstown (Irvinestown) in May 1883 and the services became the responsibility of the Revs. Matthew Logan and Adam Whyte of Gortin, in which congregation it was then united. The depopulation of the district – especially of Presbyterians – led to the closing of the church, and by 1977 it was derelict and vandalised.
