Clonleigh parish, Co. Donegal, lies across the River Foyle from Strabane in Co. Tyrone. The Presbyterian church for the parish is found in the small village of Ballindrait, approx 5 kms from Lifford. The congregation was originally known as Lifford and, the first recorded minister, REV. WILLIAM TRAILL was secretly ordained in Ballindrait in 1672, but being greatly persecuted, he fled to Scotland c1682. His successor, REV. JOHN ROWAT, was in Derry during the Seige and died 1694

The marriage register is particularly useful to Tyrone genealogists as it contains the names of partners whose place of residence is within parishes in the Strabane area of Co. Tyrone.

The congregation published its history in 2008: A History of Ballindrait Church and its PeopleBelinda Mahaffy ISBN 978-0-9561083-0-2

This area was known as the Laggan Valley and was subject to intensive Scottish settlement from the early years of the Plantation 1610-20. Two interesting and useful histories of Presbyterian congregations and the early years of Scots settlement in the Laggan were published in the early twentieth century by the Rev. Alexander G. Lecky; The Laggan and its Presbyterianism (1905) and In the Days of the Laggan Presbytery (1908) and are available as Ebooks http://www.cotyroneireland.com/estore/index.php?maincat_id=6

The earliest surviving registers for Ballindrait have been microfilmed by the staff of PRONI, Belfast, where they may be consulted: Baptisms 1819-61 and 1873-1923; Marriages, 1827-8 and 1845-1901 PRONI Ref.: MIC1P/185
