Dec 20 1825 MCILWAIN (HAZLETT). At Ramelton, on Saturday the 3d instant, Mrs. McIlwain, youngest daughter of Dr. Hazlett, of that town, universally regretted Aug 16 1826 SWINEY. On the 3rd inst. at his residence, Moyagh-House, Ramelton, Daniel Swiney, Esq., universally regretted by a numerous circle of friends and acquaintances (Belfast Commercial Chronicle) Nov 13 1826 Suicide – A most melancholy case of Suicide occurred on the 23rd ult, at the residence of Sir James Stewart, Bart., near Ramelton. It appears that a male servant of this gentleman had formed an intimacy, of a matrimonial nature, with a female fellow-servant of the same house; which, having been kept up for a considerable length of time, terminated in an engagement of matrimony; and that afterwards violated by the male servant. The circumstances took such an effect on the unhappy girl’s mind, that she endeavoured to terminate her existence by suspending herself by a handkerchief from the ceiling of the garret of the house, and would have succeeded in this attempt, but for an inmate of the whose course was providentially directed to the almost fatal spot at the time. But, melancholy to relate, her deliverance from death was but of short duration; for a short time afterwards, she partook of six ounces of Nitre – and thus the death of a betrayed female, caused by a false and brutal betrayer. – Strabane Post. (Belfast Commercial Chronicle) Dec 12 1826 HASLETT. ACCIDENTAL DEATH. --- On Wednesday, the 22d ult. an accident, which cost an estimable young gentleman his life, occurred in the immediate neighbourhood of Ramelton. Mr. Charles Haslett, a native of Meadville, in the United States of America, had come to this country, a few months previously, on a visit to his relations, and, in company with another young gentleman, was out shooting. He was in the act of climbing a fence, when the gun, which it is conjectured was at full cock, exploded, and melancholy to relate, the entire contents lodged in his head, and caused instant death. The deceased was a young gentleman of great promise, and his melancholy fate is sincerely deplored. (Strabane Morning Post) Nov 29 1828 DELAP.
