MOUNTCASTLE CEMETERY was opened for interments in 1937 replacing the ancient and pre-Reformation Donagheady Old Graveyard at Bunowen, Donemana and Grange Old Graveyard, both which had been closed as risks to public health. Although a municipal graveyard, Mountcastle was favoured by the Presbyterian families of the district.

GRANGE AND DONAGHEADY GRAVEYARDS

The Clerk reported in connection with the proposed replacement of Grange and Donagheady graveyards, which had been closed, by a new central graveyard, a committee had inspected several sites in the Mountcastle district, which was midway between the two. They had received three offers from men in the district, one from Mr. Scott of 1½ acres at £150, one from Mr. Gibson of three acres at £200, and a third from Mr. Lyons offering part of a ten-acre field at £200 per acre. The committee had decided to accept Mr. Scott’s offer. Several members expressed the opinion that it would be advisable to secure a fairly large plot of land and obviate the necessity of extending the graveyard later.

The matter was adjourned to give the committee an opportunity to approach Mr. Scott (Derry Journal)
