John Inch and Jack Elder - Early Sproule Family Historians
Jack Elder worked on the history of the Sproule Family in County Tyrone and he recorded a series of notes and family trees. Between 1880 and 1930, Jack Elder investigated the family himself, and he also gathered a great deal of information from earlier researchers. Elder also had the help of 40 pages of information left by John Inch, who had died in 1877.
John Inch was born on June 29th 1795, the son of Leonard Inch and Ann Sproule.1 Leonard and Ann Inch had lived first in Strabane but soon after their marriage they moved to a place that Inch called “Corough-a-Mulkin” in the parish of Lower Langfield in County Tyrone. Their son, John Inch, emigrated to New Brunswick in Canada in 1820, taking with him his Sproule stories and family histories.
Jack Elder also lived in New Brunswick, he went there in 1886. A few years later he heard of John Inch and his notes on the Sproule Family of Tyrone. He contacted the nephew of John Inch, and managed to acquire a copy of the 40 precious hand written pages. Elder used the notes to help compile a series of Sproule family trees which were produced in 1890.

28 May 1822
Yesterday morning, after a short but severe illness, in the forty-eighth year of his age, deeply regretted by a very extensive and respectable circle of friends and acquaintances, Mr. Gerrard Irvine, of this town, Merchant.
It would be superfluous to descant upon the loss which society has sustained, by the premature death of this kind hearted man. His character requires not the meed of panegyric, and he will be long remembered amongst us as an affectionate husband and parent, a hospitable neighbour, a Protector of the Orphan and THE POOR MAN’S FRIEND.
His heart, with steady ardour burned,
To help the struggling poor;
No friend in need repulsed, returned
From GERRARD IRVINE’S door!
11 June 1822
On Wednesday last, Mr. Gerrard Johnston Irvine, of this town, after a long illness.

KERR. On Thursday last, MRS. KERR, wife of MR. JOSIAS KERR, merchant, of this town [Strabane] - Posthumous eulogiums have been so often the vehicles of the personal partialities of the writer of them, that readers are sometimes disposed to pass them over, very cursorily, as the effusions of biased friendship, perhaps of purchased praise. But the meek and modest individual, whose death is above announced, stands in no need of laboured panegyric, to sound her merits; her life was blameless, as her habits were unassuming; and she carried with her to the grave the unfeigned regrets of all who had an opportunity of cultivating an intimacy with her. The private virtues as they endeared her to her friends, so (actuated by her lively faith) they could not fail to secure the approbation of her God, and this conviction must greatly avail to alleviate the heavy affliction of a fond and tender husband, and affectionate family, who now lament their loss in tears of bitterness and woe.
