On the 17th inst. MR. ROBERT HALL, a long time respectable inhabitant of this town [Strabane]. No man ever sustained a painful and lingering illness with more real Christian fortitude and resignation. Rev. Stewart Hamilton, 62 yrs, This Parish, 24 Dec 1832.

Derry Clergy and Parishes by Rev. James B. Leslie 1937

Camus-Juxta-Mourne – Rectors

1804 – Stewart Hamilton installed Aug. 13 (F.F.). he was the son of John Hamilton, arm., born in Co. Tyrone, educated by Mr. Burgoyne, entered T.C.D. Feb. 23, 1787, aged 15, B.A. 1790; Curate Donagheady 1792, Rector Camus-Juxta-Mourne 1804 – 1832; Married Mary Anne Flood (M.L. 1812). His wife died Dec. 16, 1828, and he died exactly four years later on Dec. 16, 1832, buried at Strabane, where a monument to him in the old parish Church is now in Christ Church, Strabane; but B.N.L. of Jan. 1, 1833, has his death as on Dec. 19, 1832.

The Strabane Morning Post

26 Dec 1832

Seldom indeed has it fallen to our lot to record with more heartfelt sorrow and regret, the death of an individual, than that of the Rev. Stewart Hamilton. This amiable character closed his earthly scene on the morning of Thursday last. On Wednesday night, at his usual hour, he retired to rest, in perfect health, and melancholy to relate, was found next morning, “wrapped in all the darkness of death!” and without the slightest appearance of having had a struggle in dissolution --- thus proclaiming to all in language not to be forgotten - “Be still, and know that I am God;” and that, “in the midst of life, we are in death;” that “man cometh up as a flower, and is cut down - he fleeth, as it were a shadow, and continueth not, even in one stay,” and “seeing his days are determined, the number of his months are with thee, thou hast appointed his bounds that he cannot pass.” To do but common justice to the character of him who is now the “tenant of the narrow house,” would be a task, which we would only fail in completing. He was always found to possess those principles of good feeling to his fellow-man which endeared him to all; and fully shewed through life, that he forgot not the mandate of his Redeemer, “to love thy neighbour as thyself.” To the charitable institutions of the country, he proved his sincerity in God’s work by constant contribution. In his capacity, as a Christian Minister, he has laid an example to those who may come after him, by his personal piety and good works, visiting the afflicted and the dying, and like John, unceasing in his exertions when in attendance on the sick bed, in pointing out the sinner’s hope, the rock of salvation, “the Lamb of God which taketh away the sins of the World.” And here we would refer to his unwearied exertions during the late pestilence. To every house, to every hut, where it ra?ed, he became a constant visitor, and “studied to shew himself approved unto God, a workman who needeth not to be ashamed.” For a period of upwards of twenty-eight years in this parish, he proved himself the “widow’s stay and orphan’s shield.” His private donations to the poor were considerable; and he always studied to instil into the minds of youth that knowledge “which maketh wise unto salvation.” At the age of 62 years, did our Reverend Pastor complete the days appointed to him here below, and his death marked by signs of having called upon his God, “Let me live the life of the righteous, and let my latter end be like his.” ---

To say what we could to do justice to his character and conduct through life, becomes a duty we cannot fulfil; but will conclude in the words of Divine Revelation --

“Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord: even so saith the Spirit, for they rest from their labours and their works do follow them.”

He was an assiduous and successful student in the Belfast Institution, where his worth, his amiable and engaging qualities were appreciated as they deserved. After the completion of his Collegiate studies, not indeed without the attainment of many honours, he became a promising, and faithful Licentiate of the Presbyterian Church. Shortly after he had been called to that sacred office, it pleased God, whose ways are inscrutable, to interrupt his prospects of usefulness, by visiting his with a lingering disease which terminated in death. His respected parents and family, have to lament, in his decease the loss of a dutiful son and affectionate brother, accompanied however, by the consoling and cheering assurance, that he is now a child of God, and an heir of glory

The Strabane Morning Post

20 November 1827

In this town, on Thursday the 15th instant., aged 92 years, Mrs Hughes, relict of the late Mr Samuel Hughes of Milford, near Ramelton. We have reason to say, this pious handmaiden of the Lord, died in the Faith, leaving a testimony of a pious devotedness to God, and her interest in Christ, and is now arrived in that Land of pure delight, where the wicked cease from troubling, and the wearied are at rest.

1 April 1828

On the 27th instant, Miss Anne Jane Hughes, eldest daughter of Mr Hughes of this town. As far as the character of a child of her years may be said to be developed, we have seldom witnessed such amiability of disposition. That parents should feel and deplore such a loss is natural; but the deep distress of her youthful acquaintances, who followed her remains with tears to the grave, gave ample testimony that she had excited interest in a much wider field.

8 February 1831

At his father’s house in this town, on the 1st instant, after a lingering illness, which he bore with christian resignation, Robert, eldest son of Mr Samuel Hughes, Merchant, aged 21 years. To sum up his many virtues in a few words, suffice it to say, that he was a most dutiful son, an affectionate brother, a warm hearted and steady friend, and a kind benefactor to the poor ---

His disconsolate parents are much consoled with the hope, that as he lived a life of faith on his Redeemer he is now enjoying that “rest which remaineth for the people of God.’ The very numerous assemblage of persons of all ranks, who accompanied his remains to the grave, plainly evinced the high esteem in which this much lamented youth was held.

3 July 1832
